In the late 80's and early 90's, Singapore was most prosperous, beautiful people in their elegant clothes spoke good proper English were everywhere, the only people that spoke Singlish were what we termed as the Ah Beng, Ah Seng and Ah Lian Ah Hua... referring to the uneducated ignorant young punks/losers who couldn't speak proper English with bad fashion taste always started their conversations with "Walau, Wacow" and so on, which weren't that many at that time. Usually other people would shy away from them as they were loud and rude. 19 years on, it is not exclusively spoken by the Ah Lian Ah Hui anymore... but the whole island running around in singlets, shorts and slippers and speak Singlish....! "Alamak!!"

It was gracious of Claire, a fellow finalist, to jump to her defence. Now with the revelation of her involvmenti in a credit card fraud, I guess Claire might think twice again on her assessment of Ris Low. Obiviously Ris Low is not only a bimbo that fail to carry herself, and now with an integrity issue. Worst, she is still 2 years shy into adulthood. A pretty good reflection of her true shallow self. ...Maybe Claire could be a better choice to represent us.

In response to Bob Oligarchy:

English translators? Definitely!
But wait, here comes the problem: translate from?

I mean, you can't expect her to be expressing herself with Singlish on stage! How can anyone speak a SLANG on stage?

Translate from Chinese then? Just like what Morton mentioned, there are 1.5 generations who can't speak proper English. In addition to that, I think there are 2 generations who can't speak PROPER MANDARIN.

Now what?

I was surfing the net and happen to know the topic of our poor Miss Singapore on “Tharenii’s view on Ris Low – Miss Singapore 2009 Spoof”.
To be honest, to have the currently Miss Singapore to stand up against the world is already hard for her and now it is even harder for her as her own fellow citizens is not supporting her ,only for one reason: for not speaking well. To me , judging a person because of her speech instead of her within self is the not the way it should be. Maybe the poor girl is just not used to speak in front of camera and because of that moment , it sort of "burn" into our mind that she is bad. Everyone, just give her some time and she will "surprise" everyone when the right time come. Learning to speak well is not easy as i'm too do not speak well.

Hi, I am Claire, one of the finalist of Miss Singapore World. I'm writing because I wish to express that Ris is not the kind of girl you have judged based on her interview. She is a animal lover and she loves my shetland sheepdog. She is also a very sweet and kind girl who shares her things with everyone. On top of that, she does not talk the way she does when she is on camera. I believe that its just the camera making her nervous. If you talked to her personally, she is not that bad. Besides, she is taking alot of grooming and training lessons and I believe that she would be in good conditions by the time Miss World comes. :)

I feel BOTH the judges and the Ris are at fault.

Judges for misjudging and choosing her over others that presented better spoken English.

AND

Miss Ris for not polishing her spoken English to minimal standard when she entered the competition.

We'll be seeing English translators with our Singapore representatives during Q&A sessions should this standards of the pageant continue.

I feel that to a large extent, the government is to blame. In the 80s there was a movement to stop Singlish and encourage proper English. Letters condeming Singlish were published in Letters to The Forum Editor. Many MPs came out publically on TV and in the press to sanction Singlish as being cute and "unique" to Singapore, and they felt there's nothing wrong with speaking Singlish. So now we have 1.5 generations of people who cannot speak proper English and teachers who cannot teach it. Stopping Literature as a compulsory passing subject did not help in the least.

I'm not sure we should be proud of a representative who is not able to speak well. The pageant is an international competition. The Judges are at fault, not Ris, they picked her. I'm sure there were other girls who spoke better than her, but the Judges chose her instead, so stop picking on Ris, pick on the Judges
