H1N1. Bah. More than 1,000 infected in Singapore. Almost 95,000 infected worldwide. It’s all terribly upsetting. Even its name is a downer. H1N1 – what is that? It’s like a locker number in a very large changing room. Or prison. Same thing, really.

The point is the Swine’s a real bummer. But it doesn’t have to be.

Here are three ways we could inject some fun into the pandemic:

1. Turn it into a fun bet!

The first “friend” in your Facebook list to contract H1N1 buys everyone a drink. Simple as that. 

2. Turn quarantine into an exercise in match-making!

A whole bunch of people cooped up together in a chalet with nothing to do for seven days? It’s just begging for little Cupid to come swooping in to shoot his little arrows of lurrve. Besides, Singaporeans are always complaining about not having time to date. Think about the wonderful romantic story you’ll be able to tell your your grandchildren. Same taste in movies, same love of Japanese food, same icky virus! Aww. It’s a match made in quarantine heaven.

3. Turn it into a reality contest!

How do we teach the public about prevention methods while entertaining the entire nation? Put it on TV! Are You The (H1N)ONE? would feature 10 infected contestants fighting for a chance at winning a stay in hospital.

Every episode, after putting the contestants through a series of physically and mentally demanding challenges a la Fear Factor, the public gets to vote for who they want to keep in the competition, sending the contestant with the lowest number of votes home every week.

The elimination would be done America’s Next Top Model-style, with host Gurmit Singh telling the bottom pair: “Two sick dudes stand before me. The name that I do not call must go back to the Aloha Chalet, pack his bags, and leave immediately. And don’t hug me when you go.”

At which point Tim Gunn can pop in and insult everyone’s clothes.

It’s all about looking at the bright side. Remember what they say – when life hands you lemon, make money from TV ad sales.

you know, i am actually dreading it. so much so that i had a nightmare about it. (don’t believe me? watch this video.)

it’s going live. this isn’t like that-other-show-I-hosted-on-the-now-defunct-arts-central where we had scripted lines.

no, this is the talk show blogtv.sg. we’re the only LIVE talk show on national free-to-air television. we’re supposed to be fun, hip and irreverent (which got us in trouble last season).

so what will happen when we eventually go LIVE on channel newsasia on august 13th?

we’ll just have to wait and see. i just hope i don’t accidentally let slip some swear words, like ****. (use your imagination lah!)
